What is Revision Liposuction?

Revision liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that involves removing excess fat from areas of the body that were previously treated with liposuction or correcting areas that may have been overtreated. This procedure is typically performed on patients unsatisfied with their initial liposuction results or who have developed complications from the previous surgery.

Revision liposuction aims to improve the body's appearance by removing excess fat not removed during the initial surgery or adding fat to over-suctioned areas.

During revision liposuction, your surgeon will use advanced techniques to remove excess fat and sculpt your body. This may involve using smaller cannulas or different types of liposuction, such as ultrasound-assisted, radiofrequency, or plasma-assisted liposuction. Your surgeon will work closely with you to develop a customized treatment plan addressing your concerns and goals. With revision liposuction, you can achieve a more toned, proportionate physique and feel more comfortable in your skin.

Candidates for Revision Liposuction

You may be a candidate for revision liposuction if you have previously undergone liposuction and are unsatisfied with the results. Additionally, if you have developed complications such as uneven contours, lumps, or bumps, revision liposuction may be an option. However, it is essential to note that revision liposuction is not a weight loss procedure and is not suitable for individuals who are significantly overweight.

Types of Revision Liposuction

Here are the most common types of revision liposuction:

Traditional Liposuction

Traditional liposuction involves making small incisions and using a cannula to remove fat from the targeted area. This method effectively removes large amounts of fat and sculpts the body. However, it can be more invasive than other methods and may require a longer recovery.

Radio Frequency Assisted Liposuction

Radio Frequency (RF) assisted liposuction uses RF energy to tighten the skin and connective tissue within the areas treated. This method is helpful for areas with mild skin laxity after previous liposuction, although it can take as long as six months to see the final results.

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction uses high-frequency sound waves to liquefy fat cells before removing them with a cannula. This method is less invasive than traditional liposuction and can result in less bleeding and bruising. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction can also effectively treat fibrous areas like the upper back.

Plasma liposuction

Plasma-radiofrequency liposuction, also called Renuvion and J-Plasma, uses plasma energy and radiofrequency to tighten areas during liposuction. While this will not correct hanging skin, it is currently the best option for tightening skin during liposuction.

The Revision Liposuction Procedure

Before the procedure, you will be given anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable and pain-free. The type of anesthesia used will depend on the extent of the revision liposuction and your personal preferences.

Small incisions will be made in the areas where revision liposuction will be performed. These incisions are typically less than 1cm long and strategically placed to minimize scarring.

Once the incisions are made, a small cannula will be inserted into the treated area, suctioning out excess fat cells. The amount of fat removed will depend on the extent of the revision liposuction and your personal goals.

Following fat removal, the tissue may be recontoured using liposuction cannulas not connected to suction, allowing us to equalize and redistribute the remaining fat. This is also when radiofrequency (RF) or plasma/radiofrequency may be used to help tighten the skin in the area.

After, the incisions will be closed using sutures or adhesive strips. The area may be covered with a compression garment to help reduce swelling and promote healing.

Recovery from Revision Liposuction

After your revision liposuction procedure, you will be taken to a recovery area where medical staff will monitor you closely. You may be given pain medication and antibiotics to help manage discomfort and reduce infection risk.

The recovery time for revision liposuction can vary depending on the extent of the procedure and the individual's healing process. You can generally expect to experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort for several days up to a few months after the procedure.

Following your revision liposuction procedure, taking good care of yourself is vital to promote healing and reduce the risk of complications. Some postoperative care tips include:

  • Avoiding strenuous activity and exercise for a few days to several weeks after liposuction depending on the extent of the procedure
  • Wearing compression garments as directed by your surgeon
  • Taking any prescribed medications as required, including pain medication and antibiotics
  • Keeping the treated areas clean and dry
  • Following a healthy diet and staying hydrated

Your surgeon will provide specific postoperative care instructions tailored to your needs and situation. It is essential to follow these instructions closely to ensure the best possible outcome from your revision liposuction procedure.

Results of Revision Liposuction

After revision liposuction, you can expect to see an immediate improvement in the appearance of the treated area. The long-term results of revision liposuction depend on several factors, including:

  • The amount of fat removed
  • The elasticity of your skin
  • Your overall health

If you maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly, you can expect the results to be long-lasting. However, the fat may accumulate in other areas if you gain weight after the procedure.

It is important to note that revision liposuction is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. It is a cosmetic procedure that can help enhance your appearance but should not be viewed as a solution for weight loss or obesity.
