When Should I Have a Breast Lift?
If you plan to have more children, pregnancy and nursing can “undo” the breast lift results. While most likely you can still nurse a baby after a breast lift, both pregnancy and nursing are likely to stretch the breast tissue again, leaving you with the same problem. How Is a Breast Lift Performed?
Breast lift procedures are performed under general anesthesia in our state-of-the-art, Boca Raton accredited in-office surgery suite. There are different types of breast lifts that we perform depending upon the degree of breast droopiness.
- Slight sagging: For very slightly droopy areolas and breasts, we perform a “crescent lift” in which a small crescent of skin is excised from the top of the areola.
- Slightly more sagging: We may perform a modified procedure that primarily involves circular incisions around the areola. This is also called a “doughnut” mastopexy” (also called Benelli lift) because a doughnut-shaped area of skin is removed. This procedure is usually performed along with adding breast implants.
- Moderate sagging: A vertical mastopexy (lollipop incision) uses an incision around the areola and a vertical incision to the crease. This is a good procedure for a moderate amount of sagging and for a small breast reduction. Breast implants or fat grafting may be added for additional volume.
- Extensive sagging: The most common incision is called an “anchor” incision because it looks like an upside-down anchor, with an incision around the areola. It extends from the bottom of the areola to beneath the crease under the breast, and in the crease itself. Excess skin is removed to create a firmer breast, and the nipple and areola are repositioned. The nipple and areola are not removed during this procedure, merely lifted. Breast implants or fat grafting may be added for additional volume.
If you are having an implant placed along with your breast lift, it will be inserted into a pocket created directly under the breast tissue or beneath the breast muscle. The determination of placement will be made in your initial consultation. Most cases of implants added to a breast lift will be performed under the muscle and Galaflex or another mesh or Strattice is used as an internal bra to support the implant and prevent further drooping. The mesh has changed this procedure often allowing women to go braless following a lift with implants
The Breast Lift Procedure
Your mastopexy in West Palm Beach will be performed under general anesthesia by a board-certified anesthesiologist on an outpatient basis in our accredited, state-of-the-art surgery suite, where your comfort and safety are a primary focus.
Our board-certified plastic surgeons will mark your incisions prior to surgery. After you are asleep, we excise extra skin and tissue then if an implant is used create a pocket to accommodate the implant.
Mesh is usually placed and sizers are used to determine the best size and shape and you are sat up during surgery using our motorized table to assess the shape. The skin excision is adjusted and tacked prior to final closure to assess shape and symmetry.
The incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures. If fat grafting is performed it is done after the incisions are closed. Dressings are applied. You are awakened by the anesthesiologist and taken to the recovery room. The procedure takes between 3 and 4 hours and you spend about an hour recovering in the recovery room before discharge.
What to Expect During Breast Lift Recovery?
Breast lift surgery is done on an outpatient basis and you should arrange for someone to drive you home after your surgery and stay with you overnight. There will be some pain and swelling for a couple of days after surgery, and you will have prescription pain medication to help you stay comfortable in the early stages of healing. Soreness and swelling may last up to several weeks.
You will be seen the next day in the office and the surgical wrap removed. You will be placed in a soft bra (we provide). After you return you may shower and replace the bra provided. You will be seen a few days later for a follow-up to assess healing Wear the bra provided until our staff says otherwise. Don’t buy new bras until the swelling subsides, which may be a few weeks after surgery.
Here is a general timeline of breast lift recovery:
- One week before you can return to work (depending on your job)
- May Sooner if implants are not placed
- Four days or so to resume driving
- You may resume brisk walking 48 hours after surgery and more intense cardio 1-2 weeks after surgery. Limited weight lifting may be started 1 week after surgery. No CrossFit, push-ups, or major chest work for 6 weeks after surgery
- Golf and tennis may be resumed about 2-4 weeks after surgery
- You can wear underwire bras after being cleared by our staff
