What is a Breast Reduction?

A breast reduction is a surgical procedure performed to reduce the size of the breasts and reshape them to achieve a smaller, more manageable and attractive appearance. Breast reduction surgery involves removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and loose skin to create a breast size more proportional and balanced with your body. A breast reduction can be a functional procedure in addition to a cosmetic surgery because overly large breasts can cause pain in the shoulders, neck, and back, impair proper posture and make exercise difficult.

Why Choose Sanctuary Plastic Surgery for Your Breast Reduction?

If you are considering reducing the size of your breasts, a highly experienced plastic surgeon can create extraordinarily balanced, natural looking results, performing your surgery with the latest advances in surgical technique and the most cutting-edge technology available.

Breast Reduction and Child-BearingWhat’s Right for You?

If you plan to have more children, pregnancy and nursing can impact breast reduction, so we advise women to wait until they have finished having children before undergoing a breast reduction in West Palm Beach at Sanctuary Plastic Surgery.

Although hidden within a bra or bathing suit, a breast reduction creates visible scars that will fade with time. In rare cases, the surgery may lead to unevenly positioned nipples or some loss of sensation in the nipples or breasts. Sometimes after undergoing a breast augmentation with breast implants, some women choose to return to a smaller size or their original size. The implants can be removed and the breasts restored to a firm, plump, smaller profile with a breast lift. Our surgeons are well known for their expertise with what's known as "internal bra technology," enabling them to create a supple and youthful breast shape with lasting results.

What Should I Expect in the Procedure?

Our surgeons will perform your breast reduction under general anesthesia by a board-certified anesthesiologist on an outpatient basis in our accredited, state-of-the-art surgery suite, where your comfort and safety are a primary focus.

We will mark your incisions prior to surgery. After you are asleep, we excise extra skin and tissue you are sitting up during surgery using our motorized table to assess the shape. The skin excision is adjusted and tacked prior to final closure to assess shape and symmetry. The incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures. If fat grafting is performed it is done after the incisions are closed. Dressings are applied. You are awakened by the anesthesiologist and taken to the recovery room. The procedure takes between 3 and 4 hours and you spend about an hour recovering in the recovery room before discharge.

Breast Reduction, Step by Step

Breast and Nipple Reshaping

Excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin are removed, and the nipple and areola are moved to a new, higher position. The breast's skin is then brought down and around the areola, shaping a new contour of the breast. Liposuction may be used to remove excess fat from the armpit area. In most cases, the nipples remain attached to their blood vessels and nerves, but in very large breasts, the nipples and areolas may have to be completely removed and grafted onto the breast, which will result in a loss of sensation in that area.

Correcting Overly Large Breasts

Stitches are usually located around the areola in a vertical line extending downward and along the lower crease of the breast. A vertical breast reduction eliminates the horizontal scar and is good for moderately large breasts. Occasionally, when only fat needs to be removed, liposuction alone can be used to reduce breast size, leaving minimal scars. During your consultation, we will examine you and explain your options. These options depend on the size of your breasts, your lifestyle, any chronic pains or issues you are experiencing.

The Incision

The most common incision pattern is called an “anchor” incision because of its shape, with an incision around the areola, from the bottom of the areola to beneath the crease under the breast and in the crease itself. A lollipop or vertical breast reduction is used for smaller breasts and has an incision around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease starting at the bottom of the areola. We will discuss incisions and options at your consultation. Modern techniques us to minimize incisions whenever possible. We offer complimentary scar laser treatments on all of our surgeries to reduce the appearance of scars.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction Surgery

While breast augmentation is a popular procedure that is used to enlarge the breasts of many of our patients, it’s also true that overly large breasts can cause a variety of both cosmetic and physical problems for individuals who are born with them. For some patients, the problem lies in their appearance, as they feel that their overly large breasts are keeping them from fitting into the clothes that they would prefer, or are creating a silhouette that they find less than ideal. For others, overly large breasts can actually cause physical problems, making it painful to wear certain types of bras and even going so far as to cause back problems due to the strain placed on the musculature.

In any case, a breast reduction surgery can reduce your bust to a more manageable size, so you can enjoy a more proportionate, feminine silhouette that perfectly fits in with your chosen lifestyle.
